Understanding Capacity Drift
A few months ago, a charge nurse described something to me that I hear often, usually in the same careful voice. She could still run her unit without a misstep. She could still hold the room during a code, chart accurately at the end of a fourteen-hour shift, and drive home and answer her kids' questions about their day. What had changed was smaller and harder to point to. The recovery that used to take one night of sleep now took most of the weekend, and even then she woke up feeling like she had not fully set the load down. Her shoulders stayed tight for hours after she got home. She needed more coffee to get started and more silence to come back down. From the outside she looked exactly as capable as she had always been, which is part of why no one, including her, treated any of it as a problem.
What she was describing is real, and it has a recognizable shape. It tends to begin well before the word most people reach for, which is burnout.
What burnout actually describes
Burnout is a serious and well-documented condition. The World Health Organization classifies it as a syndrome that results from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed, and it identifies three features: energy depletion or exhaustion, increasing mental distance or cynicism toward one's work, and a decline in professional effectiveness. The WHO is also careful to note that the term refers specifically to the work context rather than to a person's life as a whole.

That definition is useful, and it also explains a common blind spot. Each of those three features is something a person tends to notice only once it has already taken hold. By the time someone recognizes exhaustion, detachment, and reduced effectiveness in themselves, the underlying strain has usually been building for a long time. High-responsibility adults often reach that point later than most, because for months or years they keep performing at a level that hides the cost. They lead the meeting, make the decision, carry the family, and absorb the pressure, so the earlier and quieter changes in how their body is functioning go unexamined.
What Capacity Drift™ refers to
Capacity Drift™ is the name we use at Well With Doc for that earlier pattern. It describes the gradual loss of adaptability, recovery integrity, and effort-efficiency under sustained demand. In everyday terms, it is the stage where a person can still meet their responsibilities while those responsibilities subtly begins to cost more.
It helps to be specific about what "costs more" means, because it shows up in measurable daily experience. Recovery elasticity refers to how quickly your system returns to a steady baseline after effort, and early in Capacity Drift that return slows, so a hard week leaves a longer tail than it used to. Tolerance narrows, which means the level of demand you can absorb before feeling reactive gets smaller, aka, a short fuse. The body tends to hold tension after the demanding moment has passed rather than releasing it. Tasks that once felt automatic, including ordinary decisions, start drawing on a limited supply of decision bandwidth. None of these changes is dramatic on its own, and that is precisely why they are easy to overlook in a capable person.
It is worth understanding how this relates to burnout, because the two are not competing labels for the same thing. Burnout describes a later stage, identified once distress has become difficult to ignore. Capacity Drift describes an earlier stage, when the system is still functioning while becoming less flexible, less restored, and more dependent on effort to produce the same output. Naming that earlier stage matters because it is the window where there is still meaningful room to respond.

What is happening underneath
Beneath the daily experience is a physiological process that has been studied for decades. When the body meets a demand, it activates a coordinated stress response, and that response is designed to switch on, do its job, and switch back off. Researchers describe the cumulative effect of that system having to fire again and again as allostatic load, the wear that accumulates when the mechanisms built to keep you stable have to stay engaged for too long. Each activation carries a short-term benefit, because it helps you meet the moment, and it also leaves a cost. When the demand never fully lets up, the body can stop returning to its original baseline and begin operating from a more strained one.
This is, at its core, a nervous system process. Your nervous system manages the transitions that capacity depends on, including the shift into focused effort and the release back into rest, the ability to start and to stop, to engage and to settle. When those transitions are working well, you do not have to force them. As Capacity Drift develops, the nervous system has more difficulty making those shifts cleanly, and the body tends to stay partially braced even when the situation no longer calls for it. That kind of nervous system miscommunication, which in chiropractic terms we describe as subluxation, means the system is not sending and receiving the clear signals it needs to regulate itself and recover. A chiropractic adjustment is intended to address that interference directly, restoring clearer communication so the body can return to managing its own recovery instead of holding itself together through sustained effort.
Seen this way, what a person feels is less about motivation or discipline and more about whether their system is adapting or compensating. Adaptation means you carry the load and still recover afterward. Compensation means you carry the same load by drawing down reserves you are not replacing, relying on more tension, more urgency, and more recovery debt to keep going. Heart rate variability research offers one objective window into this, since it reflects the autonomic flexibility that allows the body to move between stress and recovery, and that flexibility tends to narrow under prolonged strain.
A more useful question, asked earlier
For many high-responsibility adults, the instinct is to wait until things get bad enough to justify the word burnout before taking the experience seriously. A more useful question can be asked much earlier: is my body requiring more effort to carry the same responsibilities than it used to? Learning to notice the answer is a form of signal detection, and it tends to surface the pattern early, while there is still meaningful room to respond.
A person can still care about their work, still be effective, and still meet every obligation while their recovery is slowing, their tolerance is shrinking, and their baseline tension is rising. Those changes deserve attention in their own right, because they are the system communicating something specific about its current capacity, well before that message has to become loud. Reading these drift markers as information, rather than as personal failure, is what makes it possible to act on them in time.

If there is one thing I want stabilizers to take from this, it is that the ability to keep going is not the same as recovering well. The first sign of strain is often not collapse; honestly, I wish it was! It would've saved me on ER visits, sleepless nights, and I don't know how many POUNDS of coffee. It shows up as cost, in the form of more effort to start, more tension that lingers, and more time required to recover from things that used to feel routine. Treating those signs as character flaws only delays the response they are asking for, because what they actually offer is accurate information about how your system is functioning under its current load.
The reason Capacity Drift matters is that it points to a window most people move straight past, the stretch where you still look capable and the cost has only started to climb. That window is where operational longevity is actually built. The goal is to learn to read the pattern while you still have room to respond to it, rather than waiting until the body becomes impossible to ignore, so that you can preserve the capacity that everyone depending on you is counting on.
