Your Adjustment Reaches the Nerve That Controls Inflammation

My last patient one Thursday was a nurse. Typically her biggest problem is the neck ( a lot of charting), but there was something else too. Then told me what was actually messing with her, the thing that was deeply troubling her from day to day. She wanted to tell me that she no longer bouncing back. A hard shift used to cost her one bad night of sleep but now, now it cost her three days of feeling wound up, short with the people she loves, and puffy in the hands. She was still great at her job, still the best on her floor. Its just that being great started to cost her nervous system more.

I told her the truth. A large part of what she was feeling runs through one nerve, and the care I do reaches it. Here's what I mean.

Your Nervous System Controls Inflammation.

The vagus nerve is the long nerve running from your brain down through your neck to your heart and gut. It runs your body's off-switch for inflammation. When the vagus nerve is active, it tells your immune cells to ease off, and the chemicals driving inflammation come down. The main one has a name you will see again in this article, TNF-alpha. Boom, That's Science!

Doctors can implant small devices to stimulate the vagus nerve, and use them to treat inflammatory diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis for example. A more active vagus nerve means better control over inflammation. So, now the question is: does a chiropractic adjustment reach this same nerve? The research says yes, and it says so on two fronts.

Adjustments Shift Your Body Into Recovery Mode, Within Minutes.

Your nervous system runs in two modes. One ramps you up for stress and the other, run mostly by the vagus nerve, drops you into rest and recovery. Think one helps you run away from the bear, the other helps you want to go take a nice bubble bath.

You measure which mode you are in with heart rate variability (HRV), the reading many smartwatches and rings already track. Higher HRV means your body moves into recovery mode more easily. Now, adjustments move it there fast! In one study, people got an adjustment and within minutes, their recovery-mode reading rose and their blood pressure dropped about 11 points. Another study worked the soft tissue and guess what? It slowed the heart and raised HRV. A slower, steadier heart is the vagus nerve doing its job!

They Lower The Exact Chemicals The Vagus Nerve Controls!

The chemicals adjustments bring down are the same ones the vagus nerve controls. The two halves of the story fit.

In a controlled study of 64 healthy adults, a single adjustment lowered two main inflammation chemicals, including TNF-alpha, within two hours, while the people who got a fake adjustment saw those chemicals rise. In people with back pain, six adjustments over two weeks brought the same marker down 17 to 22 percent! A short round of care in another back-pain group pulled two more inflammation markers down toward the levels of healthy, pain-free people.

A 2025 came with a twist, a comparison group getting fake treatments. Over 12 weeks, the group getting real adjustments held lower TNF-alpha, and it stayed lower a full month after care ended. The researchers read it as a real, regulating effect on inflammation across the whole body.

What This Means For You (a word from Doc)

Lets put it all together now. Adjustments shift your body into recovery mode within minutes, and they lower the same inflammation chemicals your vagus nerve is built to control. These effects show up after a single visit, across a two-week round of care, and through 12 and 16-week studies, in healthy people and in people with pain. This matches what I watch happen in my patients.

It is also why I frame this work the way I do. Chiropractic care supports the nervous system your whole body runs on, and the nervous system sits behind the choice to keep inflammation switched on or let it settle.

Here's what to do with this. After your next hard day, notice how fast you truly wind down, in your body and your head. Watch your HRV, write down what you see. Then, let me read the pattern with you. At Well With Doc, we start with a Capacity Mapping session, because how fast you recover is a number worth understanding and a number worth improving.
